How to test your AirPods mic

  1. Put your AirPods in and make sure they’re connected to this device.
  2. Click Start Mic Test above and allow microphone access.
  3. In the Microphone dropdown, choose your AirPods. If only another mic is listed, set AirPods as the input on your device first (below), then reload this page.
  4. Use Record & Playback to hear how you’ll sound to others.

Set AirPods as your microphone

  • Mac: System Settings → Sound → Input, then select your AirPods.
  • Windows 11: Settings → System → Sound, and under Input pick your AirPods. Windows may list them twice; choose the one labelled as a headset or hands-free device.
  • iPhone: AirPods are used automatically while connected. Web pages may still list only “iPhone Microphone”.

AirPods mic not working? Try these fixes

  • Check the microphone setting: on iPhone, open Settings → Bluetooth, tap the info icon next to your AirPods, and set Microphone to Automatic. If it’s set to Always Left or Always Right, that AirPod must be in your ear.
  • Clean the mic openings: gently clear the small grilles on the stem with a dry, soft-bristled brush. Blocked grilles make you sound muffled.
  • Stop automatic switching: AirPods can jump to another Apple device signed in to your Apple Account. Reconnect them to the device you’re using.
  • Reset them: put both AirPods in the case, open the lid, and hold the setup button (or the digital crown on AirPods Max) for about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber then white. Then reconnect.
Sound quality drops on Windows during calls? That’s normal. When the AirPods mic is active on a Windows PC, Bluetooth switches to a lower-quality mode that carries audio both ways. For better sound, use a separate mic and keep AirPods for listening.

How do I test my AirPods microphone?

Connect your AirPods, click Start Mic Test on this page, choose your AirPods in the Microphone dropdown, and speak. Use the Record & Playback tool to hear exactly how you sound.

Why is my AirPods mic not working?

Common causes are another device being selected as the input, the Microphone setting being fixed to one AirPod that isn't in your ear, blocked mic grilles, or AirPods switching to another Apple device. Set AirPods as the input, check the Microphone setting in Bluetooth settings, and reset them if needed.

Why do my AirPods sound bad on Windows when I use the mic?

When the microphone is active, Windows switches AirPods to a Bluetooth mode that carries audio both ways at lower quality. This is expected. Using a separate microphone lets AirPods stay in high-quality listening mode.

Does this test record or upload my voice?

No. Audio is processed only in your browser. Recordings stay in your browser's memory and are cleared when you leave or refresh the page, unless you choose to download them.
