How to test your iPhone mic

  1. Open this page in Safari or Chrome on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Start Mic Test and tap Allow when asked.
  3. Speak and watch the meter. Then try Record & Playback to hear yourself.

If the browser can’t use the mic

  • Safari: open Settings → Apps → Safari → Microphone (on older iOS, Settings → Safari) and set it to Ask or Allow.
  • Chrome and other apps: open Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and switch the app on.

If the mic works here but not in an app

Check the same Privacy & Security → Microphone list for that app. If it isn’t listed, open the app and try its mic once so iOS asks for permission.

Rule out the hardware

  • Bluetooth: connected AirPods, a car, or a headset can take over the mic. Turn Bluetooth off and test again.
  • Case and screen protector: make sure neither covers the mic openings at the bottom edge or near the camera.
  • Clean the openings gently with a dry, soft brush — never a pin.
Which mic is it? iPhones have several microphones. Recording a Voice Memo uses the bottom one; a front-camera video uses the top one. If one sounds fine and the other muffled, that opening is likely blocked.

If no mic works anywhere after a restart, contact Apple Support — it may need a repair.

Why is my iPhone mic not working in Safari?

Safari's microphone permission may be set to Deny. Open Settings, go to Safari (under Apps on newer iOS versions), and set Microphone to Ask or Allow.

Why do people say I sound muffled on my iPhone?

A case, screen protector, or debris may be blocking a mic opening, or a Bluetooth device may be acting as the mic. Remove the case, clean the openings with a soft brush, and disconnect Bluetooth devices.

Does this test record or upload my voice?

No. Everything stays in your browser, and recordings are discarded when you leave the page unless you download them.
