How to read the result

  • Left, then right, then both: everything is correct.
  • Right first, then left: your headphones are on backwards (check the L and R markings), or the speaker cables are swapped.
  • Only one side ever plays: see the fixes below.
  • Both sides play the whole time: your system is set to mono audio, or you’re using a single speaker.

1. Check the balance setting

  • Windows 11: Settings → System → Sound, click your output device, and check the left and right volume sliders are even.
  • Mac: System Settings → Sound → Output, and center the Balance slider.

2. Turn off mono audio

Accessibility settings can combine both channels. On Windows, look for Mono audio under Settings → Accessibility → Audio. On Mac, check System Settings → Accessibility → Audio.

3. Check the plug and cable

A plug that isn’t fully inserted often plays in only one ear. Push it in fully, then wiggle the cable near the plug while the tone plays — if sound cuts in and out, the cable is damaged.

4. Bluetooth earbuds

If one earbud is silent, put both in the case, reconnect, and check each is charged. Many earbuds can be reset from the case; check the maker’s instructions.

How do I test my left and right speakers?

Click Play Test Sound on this page. A tone plays in the left channel, then the right, then both. If the order is reversed or one side is silent, follow the fixes on this page.

Why is sound only coming from one side of my headphones?

The plug may not be fully inserted, the balance may be set to one side, mono audio may be on, or the cable may be damaged. For wireless earbuds, reconnect and check that both are charged.

How do I know if my headphones are on the right way?

Play the test: the first tone should be in your left ear. If you hear it in your right ear first, swap them around.

Does this test need microphone permission?

No. The speaker test only plays a generated tone and doesn't access your microphone or camera.
