How to fix no sound on Windows 11

1. Pick the right output device

Click the speaker icon on the taskbar, then the arrow next to the volume slider, and choose your speakers or headphones. Windows often switches to a monitor, TV, or Bluetooth device you forgot was connected.

2. Check every volume control

  • The taskbar volume isn’t muted or at zero.
  • In Settings → System → Sound → Volume mixer, your browser or app isn’t turned down.
  • The browser tab isn’t muted (right-click the tab in Chrome or Edge).
  • Speakers are powered on with their own volume knob up.

3. Monitors and TVs

Over HDMI or DisplayPort, sound goes to the display’s speakers, which are often quiet or muted. Check the display’s own volume, or switch the output back to your speakers.

4. Bluetooth audio

If headphones are connected but silent, remove them in Settings → Bluetooth & devices and pair them again.

5. Run the troubleshooter

Search for Get Help in the Start menu and run the audio troubleshooter. It can restart audio services and reset settings.

6. Reinstall the audio driver

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click your audio device, and choose Uninstall device.
  3. Restart so Windows reinstalls it.

Why is there no sound on my Windows 11 PC?

Most often Windows is sending sound to a different output, such as a monitor or Bluetooth device, or a volume control is muted. Pick your speakers from the taskbar's sound output list and check the volume mixer.

How do I test my speakers on Windows 11?

Why does my monitor have no sound?

When a monitor or TV is the output, sound plays through its speakers, which may be muted or missing. Switch the output back to your speakers or turn up the display's volume.
