How to fix a USB microphone
1. Check the mic itself
- Many USB mics have a mute button with a light: often red or flashing means muted.
- Turn up the gain knob if it has one.
- If your mic has a headphone jack, plug headphones in — hearing yourself there confirms the mic is getting power and picking up sound.
2. Try a different port and cable
Plug directly into the computer instead of a hub, dock, or keyboard port, and try another USB port. Swap the cable if you have a spare — some charge-only cables don’t carry data.
3. Select it as your input
- Windows 11: Settings → System → Sound → Input.
- Mac: System Settings → Sound → Input.

4. Check permissions
On Windows, Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone must allow apps and desktop apps. On Mac, allow your app under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
5. Reinstall or update drivers (Windows)
In Device Manager → Audio inputs and outputs, right-click the mic, choose Uninstall device, unplug it, restart, and plug it back in. Check the maker’s website too — some mics need their own software for gain or monitoring controls.

Why is my USB microphone not detected?
Try a different USB port directly on the computer, a different cable, and restart. Hubs, docks, and charge-only cables are common causes. On Windows, check Device Manager under Audio inputs and outputs.
Why is my USB mic plugged in but silent?
The mic may be muted with its own button, have its gain turned down, or not be selected as the input in your system or app. Use the mic test on this page to pick it directly and check the meter.
